Historical museum reopens in new location

2/12/2007

After being shuttered for six months, the Miami Springs Historical Museum recently reopened in a new location and with new exhibits.

The museum is located downtown, at 26 Westward Dr.

Director Yvonne Shoenberger said the displays are more beautiful and interesting than ever.

On Jan. 19 the museum opened with a wine and cheese reception which drew more than 50 guests, including City Council members and administrators.

The museum contains airline and aviation history, the history of Glenn Hammond Curtiss, known as the father of naval aviation.

The museum also includes information and pictures of the early years of Hialeah, Miami Springs and Opa-locka, all of which were founded by Curtiss.

For 20 years, the museum sat above Stadnik`s Miami Springs Pharmacy.

Curator MaryAnn Goodlett-Taylor gathered memorabilia and historic documents.

However, Shoenberger said, visitors were hampered by limited hours and a daunting staircase.

The museum closed in July because the pharmacy owners rented the space to another tenant.

The reopening is the result of a partnership between the city and the Miami Springs Historical Society.

The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, from 4 to 9 p.m., Fridays and from 4 to 8:30 p.m. the second Monday of each month.

The admission cost is $5 for adults and $2 for seniors and children.
